Defence has been always the proudest career options for the youth in India. Joining the Defence forces of our country and doing one’s part in securing the land, air and water territories from enemies gives immense satisfaction and glory to any person.

To join the Indian Defence Forces namely The Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force a student can enter after 10+2 or its equivalent or even after graduation. As there are multiple ways of entry into the Defence forces at different levels of educational qualification.

Here we will be discussing majorly the paths that a student can take after completing 10+2 or equivalent to join the Defence Forces in India.

Eligibility:

Subject Requirements:

For the Army Wing of National Defence Academy:  Any Subjects combination is accepted.

For the Technical Entry Scheme in Indian Army: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are compulsory.

For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and for the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy: The candidates must have the Class 12 pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

Age Limit: 16.5 to 19.5 years.

Educational Qualification: 10+2 or its equivalent.

Other Important Eligibility Criteria:

Marital Status: Unmarried

Gender: Both Male and Female Candidates are eligible to appear for NDA & NA Examination as per the Supreme Court of India order in the year 2021.

Nationality: A candidate must be either:

(i) a Citizen of India, or

(ii) a subject of Nepal, or

(iii) a subject of Bhutan, or

(iv) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

(v) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Note: Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India Certificate of eligibility will not, however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal

 

Physical and Medical Standards:

1. Height & weight

The minimum acceptable height is 157 cm (162.5 cms. for the Air Force). For Gorkhas and individuals belonging to hills of North-Eastern regions of India, Garhwal and Kumaon, the minimum acceptable heights will be 5 cms. less. In case of candidates from Lakshadweep the minimum acceptable height can be reduced by 2 cms. Height and weight standards are given below:

  • Height relaxable upto 2.5 cm may be allowed where the Medical Board certifies that the candidate is likely to grow and come up to the required standard on completion of his training.

2. Chest Measurement

Chest should be well developed. Fully expanded chest should not be less than 81 cm. The minimum range of expansion after full inspiration should be 5 cms.

NDA NA Entrance Exam:  The National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Entrance Exam is the biggest examination for 10+2 or its equivalent students to join the Indian Defence Forces.

The examination can be given by 10+2 or its equivalent passed or final exam appearing candidates. This examination can only be given by unmarried male candidates to join The Indian Army, Indian Navy and The Indian Air Force.

The Process after the NDA NA Entrance Exam is as follows:

After conducting the written exam, UPSC prepares a list of candidates who obtain the minimum qualifying NDA selection process marks as decided by the commission. Such candidates are only called for SSB Interview. The candidates in SSB Interview are assessed on Officers Officers Potentiality. Candidates who apply for the Air Force need to qualify Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS).

  • SSB Interview consists of two-stage selection process :Psychological Aptitude Test and Intelligence Test
  • Selected candidates need to report to the Selection Centres/Air Force Selection Boards/Naval Selection Boards
  • Such candidates need to undergo stage-one test at the respective selection centres
  • Candidates qualifying the stage one test will be selected for the second stage
  • Candidates who qualifies stage two are required to submit the original certificates along with one photocopy of the following certificates –
  1. Pass Certificate of Class 10 or equivalent certificate in support of date of birth
  2. Pass Certificate of Class 12 or equivalent in support of educational qualification

To be accepted for the Indian Army/Navy/Naval Academy and Air Force under NDA recruitment, candidates need to secure the Cutoff marks of NDA NA separately in written exam and SSB Interview.

Candidates for Air Force, should separately qualify for Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS)

Final selection for admission to the Army, Navy, Air Force wings of NDA and 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme of Indian Naval Academy will be done as per vacancies subjected to their eligibility, medical fitness and merit-cum-preference of candidates.

TES: TES is the Technical Entry Scheme by the Indian Army to recruit students in the Technical Departments of The Indian Army.In this Scheme, unmarried male Candidates who have passed 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (hereinafter referred to as PCM) subjects and fulfill the eligibility conditions are granted Permanent Commission in the Army.

Type of Commission: On successful completion of 4 years of the course, cadets will be granted Permanent Commission in the Army in the rank of Lieutenant.

Seniority: They will be granted seniority on overall order of merit of the three technical institutes combined i.e. CME,MCTE,MCEME and in case the date of commissioning coincides with that of IMA, Dehradun, they will be placed en-block junior to IMA (NDA/ ACC / DE Course ) but above TGC / UES course. 6. Training. Total training will be 5 years.

Details are as under:

(a) Basic Military Training. 1 year (Officer Training Academy Gaya).

(b) Technical Training.

(i) Phase-I (Pre Commission Training): 3 Years (CME Pune or MCTE Mhow or MCEME Secunderabad),

(ii) Phase-II (Post Commission Training): 1 year at CME Pune or MCTE Mhow or MCEME Secunderabad.

(c) Award of Degree: The candidates will be awarded an Engineering degree after successful completion of the final examination. No ante date will be admissible to candidates on account of this Engineering degree. During the last two semesters, the officers will be permitted only one relegation on academic grounds. This relegation will be within the maximum two relegations permitted on academic grounds in the entire Engineering degree (8 semesters) in accordance with JNU Ordinance. Any further relegation of the officer on academic grounds will lead to termination of his commission.

 

Selection Procedure. The selection procedure is as follows:-

(a) Shortlisting of Applications: Integrated HQ of MoD (Army) reserves the right to shortlist applications and to fix cutoff percentage of marks without assigning any reason. After shortlisting of candidates, the Centre allotment will be intimated to the candidate via their email. After allotment of Selection Centre, firm SSB dates will be allotted to the candidates.

(b) Only shortlisted eligible candidates depending on the cutoff percentage will undergo SSB at one of the Selection Centres i.e, Allahabad (UP), Bhopal (MP), Bengaluru (Karnataka) or Kapurthala (Punjab) by Psychologist, Group Testing Officer and Interviewing Officer. Call Up letter for SSB interview will be issued by respective Selection Centres on candidate’s registered e-mail ID and SMS only. Allotment of Selection Centre is at the discretion of Directorate General of Recruiting, Integrated Headquarters of MoD (Army) and NO request for changes are entertained in this regard.

(c) Candidates will be put through two-stage selection procedures. Those who clear Stage I will go to Stage II. Those who fail in Stage I will be returned on the same day. Duration of SSB interview is five days and details of the same are available at the official website of Directorate General of Recruiting www.joinindianarmy.nic.in . This will be followed by a medical examination for the candidates who get recommended after Stage II.

(d) Candidates recommended by the SSB and declared medically fit, will be issued a Joining Letter for training in the order of merit, depending on the number of vacancies available, subject to meeting all eligibility criteria. In the eventuality of being recommended by SSB, candidates should have no objection to undergoing medical examination by the Board of Male/Female doctors. (e) Candidates recommended by the SSB and declared medically fit, will be issued a joining letter for training in the order of merit, depending on the number of vacancies available.

(f) The finally selected candidates will execute all the Bonds/Certificates as prescribed for the Cadets of NDA entry under AI 53/78.

(g) Candidate will not have any objection in the event of final selection, on allotment of any Arm/Service in the interest of the organisation.

 

Note 1. No claim or compensation will be made by the candidate if at any stage of selection the candidate’s ineligibility is detected and candidature is cancelled as a result thereof.

Note 2. Candidate will be debarred from future attempts and cancellation from the present course if at any stage of selection he is found to be indulging in any violation of local orders concerning discipline aspects.

Note 3. PROCEDURE FOR COMMON CANDIDATES : TES & NDA ENTRY : The candidates who apply for 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme (TES) and National Defence Academy (NDA & NA) parallel courses need to undergo a medical examination by a Board of Service Medical Officers for the entries recommended.

 

Indian Navy Direct Entry: Permanent Commission For Undergraduate Level Entry: 10+2(B.Tech):

12th Pass with 70% in PCM and 50% in English in 10th or 12th standard can apply for IN officers’ entry viz 10+2(B.Tech). Wef  Jan 17, JEE (Mains) rank has been made compulsory to apply for 10+2(B.Tech) entry.

This entry is opened twice a year for Spring Term & Autumn Term. NHQ prepares and releases the advertisement in Employment News/Important Newspapers for inviting applications  6-8 months prior to the commencement of the course. Post receipt of applications, candidates are shortlisted for SSB based on  JEE (Main) – All India Rank (AIR) for BE/B Tech curriculum. Validity of the JEE (Main) rank for applying for the scheme is one year from the date of declaration of the JEE (Main) ranking by CBSE/NTA.

On completion of all SSBs, merit list is prepared in respect of all SSB qualified candidates and candidates are thereafter appointed in order of merit based on no. of vacancies.
