Nursing has been a course which has its importance since many years and with the high growth of Medical Technology and Health Infrastructures globally as a career its importance has taken a new shape altogether.

There are multiple levels of entry in the field of Nursing, we will discuss each of them in detail here.

Governing Body: The Indian Nursing Council sets the standards and guidelines for training and other requirements for  Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors in India.

Eligibility:

Subject Requirements:  Physics, Chemistry and Biology in 10+2 or equivalent.

Age Limit:  Check different colleges and universities for their age limit criteria.

Educational Qualification:  10+2 or equivalent

Marks Requirement:  Different Entrance Examinations and Colleges/Universities admissions have different requirements.

Courses:  The following courses can be pursued by students after 10+2 in Nursing in India:

Please read the following course details along with the eligibility criteria for each of them:

ANM (Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife) Course Duration: 2 years-

  • The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on or before 31st December of the year in which admission is sought.
  • The maximum age for admission shall be 35 years.
  • The minimum educational requirements shall be 10 + 2 in Arts (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Economics, Political Science, History, Geography, Business Studies, Accountancy, Home Science, Sociology, Psychology, and Philosophy) and English Core/English Elective or Science or Health care Science - Vocational stream ONLY passing out from recognized Board.
  • Students shall be medically fit.
  • Students qualified in 10+2 Arts or Science examinations conducted by the National Institute of Open School.
  • Students shall be admitted once in a year.

GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) (Course Duration: 3.6 years):

  • 10+2 with English and must have obtained a minimum of 40% at the qualifying examination and English individually for any recognized board. Candidates are also eligible from State Open School recognized by State Government and National Institute of Open School (NIOS) recognized by Central Government. However, Science is preferable.
  • 10+2 with English having 40% of marks in vocational ANM course from the school recognized by Indian Nursing council.
  • 10+2 with English having 40% of marks in Vocational Stream-Health care Science from a recognized CBSE board/Centre.
  • Registered ANM with a pass mark.
  • Admission of students shall be once in a year.
  • Students shall be medically fit.
  • Minimum age for admission will be 17 years. (as on 31st December of that year) The upper age limit is 35 yrs. For ANM/ for LHV, there is no age bar.

B. Sc. (N) or B.Sc. in Nursing (Course Duration: 4 years)

  • The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on 31st December of the year in which admission is sought.
  • Minimum education:
    • 10+2 class passed with Science (PCB) & English Core/English Elective with aggregate of 45% marks from recognized board under AISSCE/CBSE/ICSE/SSC/HSC or other equivalent Board.
  • Students shall be medically fit.
  • Students appearing in 10+2 examinations in Science conducted by National Institute of Open School with 45% marks.
  • Students shall be admitted once in a year.

Post Basic BSc.(N) or Post Basic B.Sc. in Nursing (Course Duration: 2 years)

  • Passed the Higher Secondary or Senior Secondary or Intermediate or 10+2 or an equivalent examination recognized by the university for this purpose. Those who have done 10+1 in or before 1986, will be eligible for admission.
  • Obtained a certificate in General Nursing and Midwifery and registered as R.N.R.M. with the State Nurses Registration Council. A male nurse, trained before the implementation of the new integrated course besides being registered as a nurse with State Nurses Registration Council, shall produce evidence of training approved by Indian Nursing Council for a similar duration in lieu of midwifery in any one of the following areas:
  • O.T. Techniques
  • Ophthalmic Nursing
  • Leprosy Nursing
  • TB Nursing
  • Psychiatric Nursing
  • Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing
  • Community Health Nursing
  • Cancer Nursing
  • Orthopedic Nursing
  • Candidates shall be medically fit.
  • Students shall be admitted once in a year.

Major Examinations:

AIIMS BSc Courses Entrance Examination:  The All India Medical Sciences BSc Courses Entrance Examination or AIIMS BSc Courses Entrance Examination is conducted by AIIMS for admissions in the BSc. Nursing, BSc. Nursing (Post Basic) and various other BSc. courses in paramedical offered at AIIMS New Delhi and its 6 other campuses.

While the BSc. Nursing (Post Basic) is offered only at AIIMS New Delhi the BSc. Nursing is offered at AIIMS New Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur and Rishikesh campuses respectively.

This is by far the most important entrance examination in India as AIIMS, New Delhi is the best medical institution of the country dearly known globally for the quality of medical standards in the institution and medical hospital.

Indian Army BSc Nursing Entrance Test:  The Indian Army BSc Nursing Entrance Test is conducted for admissions at Colleges of Nursing of Armed Forces Medical Services. Candidates will be awarded admission in Colleges of Nursing based on the merit cum choice, subject to medical fitness and the vacancies in each College. The selected candidates shall execute an Agreement/Bond to serve in the Military Nursing Service. On successful completion of nursing training (4years), the candidates will be granted Permanent/Short Service Commission in the Military Nursing Service, under the terms and conditions laid down for grant of such commission.

2. Subsequent to passing the final year University examination for B Sc (Nursing) Course, the candidates will be offered Commission in the Military Nursing Service subject to medical fitness. The date of declaration of result from respective Universities will be the date of Commission for the candidates. The date of Commission determines the date of seniority in service among all candidates who have joined the Course in the same year.

There are six Colleges of Nursing of Armed Forces Medical Services:

 (a) CON, AFMC Pune

(b) CON,CH(EC) Kolkata

(c) CON, INHS Aswini

(d) CON, AH (R&R) New Delhi

(e) CON,CH (CC) Lucknow

(f) CON,CH (AF) Bangalore

The following is the selection procedure and qualifications required :

Only Female candidates who have passed 12th or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology are eligible to apply. Minimum Aggregate marks in class 12th or equivalent is 50% and they should have passed the class 12th in the first attempt.

Candidates must also be declared medically fit. The fitness will be determined by the Medical  Board of Military Medical Officers.

The candidates selected in the Entrance Test and Medical Fitness Test will be called for Personal Interview.

After the Personal Interview as per the combined merit list based on the Entrance Test, Medical Fitness and Personal Interview candidates are called for BSc. Nursing course. The students who undergo BSc Nursing training will be granted permanent and short service commission in the ratio 60:40.

The students selected for Short Service commission will have to sign a bond of 5 years to serve in the Military Nursing service after the course completion.

JIPMER Entrance Examination:  The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research Entrance Examination or JIPMER Entrance Examination is conducted for admissions in the BSc. Nursing and various other undergraduate and postgraduate courses for allied health sciences like Paramedical etc.

JIPMER is one of the top medical colleges in India and is considered a medical institution of high importance globally.
