Hospitality and Tourism have been an important career option right from the beginning of time. With the enthusiasm for travel and tourism increasing Internationally and the demand of luxury by people of almost all paying incomes the demand in this sector has also gone significantly high and with the increasing world population it is expected to go even higher.

To start a career in Hospitality and Tourism in India a student can enter in courses of Hotel Management, Hospitality etc right after 10+2 or equivalent.

Governing Body: The Governing Body for the Hospitality, Hotel Management, Administration and Tourism courses is the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology or NCHMCT. This body gives recognition to every Institute or University to run Hotel Management and other Hospitality, Culinary and Tourism related courses.

Eligibility:

Subjects Requirement: A pass in 10+2 system of Senior Secondary examination or its equivalent with English as one of the subjects. Candidates must have passed English as a subject of study (core/elective/functional) in the qualifying examination.

Age Limit: For candidates from General and OBC categories, the upper age limit is 25 years. In the case of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates, the upper age limit is 28 years.

Education Qualification: 10+2 system of Senior Secondary examination or its equivalent.

Courses:  The various courses provided in India in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry are the 3-year courses provided in the field of Hospitality and Hotel Administration. The major one is 3 years BSc. in Hospitality and Hotel Administration provided through NCHM JEE. The various other degree courses include BA in Culinary Arts, Bachelor of Catering & Culinary Arts, BBA in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism.

Major Entrance Exams:

NCHM JEE: NCHM JEE or National Council for Hotel Management Joint Entrance Examination is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admissions in the various BSc. in Hospitality and Hotel Administration courses offered by the various Central Government Institute of Hotel Management,  PSU Institute of Hotel Management, State Government Institute of Hotel Management and Private Institute of Hotel Management.

This is the biggest entrance examination for Hospitality and Tourism in India for 10+2 students and a total 74 Institutes all over India take admissions into their various BSc. in Hospitality and Hotel Administration courses.

IIHM eCHAT: The International Institute of Hotel Management Electronic Common Hospitality Admission Test or IIHM eCHAT is conducted for admissions in their 10 campuses for their Undergraduate Hotel Management and other Hospitality courses.

IHM-A Online Profiling Test: The IHM-A or Institute of Hotel Management, Aurangabad conducts its online profiling test for admissions in its B.Sc. in Hospitality course.

The Admission process for IHM Aurangabad or IHM-A is as follows:

  • Students have to procure a unique id for themselves and continue the process – detailed registration, online payment and complete the profiling test.
  • The electronic profiling assessment will be sent to the registered email address, the student needs to click the test link, complete the test and then read through the assessment report.
  • Students will be required to carry a hard copy of this assessment report for verification before they proceed with the next steps to a Group Discussion, writing a Statement of Purpose and finally participating in a Personal Interview.
  • Students are shortlisted based on a collective assessment of Profiling (weightage – 20%), Statement of Purpose (weightage – 10%), Group Discussion (weightage – 20%) and a Personal Interview (weightage – 50%).

During the Personal Interview the talent in the following five areas are examined:

  • Communication Skills
  • Analytical Skills
  • General Awareness
  • Service Orientation
  • Personality Factors

Prescribed dress code when you go for a personal interview at the designated Centre:

  • Ladies - formal attire - saris or business suits preferred - formal ensembles or a full-sleeved shirt, scarves and formal shoes.
  • Gentlemen - formal attire – suit, jacket or blazer preferred - formal trousers, full-sleeved shirt, necktie and formal shoes.

Oberoi STEP: The Oberoi STEP or Systematic Training and Education Programme is a three-year course provided by the Oberoi Group of Hotels with affiliation from Indira Gandhi National Open University or IGNOU to class 12th students.

The course includes comprehensive on-the-job training at select Oberoi and Trident Hotels along with a correspondence Bachelor's Degree in Tourism Studies from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

The programmes offered are as follows :

  • Hotel Operations Programme - Front Office and Food & Beverage Service
  • Hotel Operations Programme - Housekeeping
  • Hotel Operations Programme - Kitchen

Eligibility for these programmes:

Candidates should be above 18 and below 20 years of age, as on 15th August, of the year of joining the Programme.

  • Clear pass in Class XII as on 1st July, of the year of joining, from a Board recognised by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), India.
  • The programmes require a Class X English score of 71% or above. The equivalent in CBSE is a B1 Grade or an 8 Grade Point.

Selection Procedure:  The Candidates have to go through an Assessment Process and Personal Interview for the admissions once they apply online for the Oberoi- STEP
