Fashion and Design:

Fashion and Design Courses in India right now are at a very high speed growing stage. With this course, the students can get very high paying jobs and can also get into entrepreneurial ventures of their own.

The Design Courses in India are very closely linked to Fashion as well, since the course of B.Des or Bachelor in Design in various colleges and universities has a very wide range of fields in which this course is conducted.

Fields that are close to Fashion for example: Fashion Design, Apparel Design, Leather and Accessories Design, Textile Design, Knitwear Design, Fashion Communication, Jewellery Design, Bachelor in Fashion Technology etc. by colleges like NIFT, etc.

There are other fields like Interior Design, Industrial Design, Product Design, Multimedia and Graphic Design, Ceramic Design, Furniture Design, Animation and Film Design, Game Design, etc which are offered as main or elective subjects in the B.Des course offered by colleges like IIT Bombay, Guwahati and Hyderabad also IIITDM, Jabalpur and even NID, Ahmedabad.

 

Eligibility:

  • Subject Requirements: The B.Des course or the Bachelor in Design course can be pursued by students of any stream (Science, Arts & Humanities, Commerce, etc.). Only a few colleges give admission in some Design courses to students having Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in 10+2 or its Equivalent.

 

  • Qualifying Examination: Any student who has passed or appearing in the final examination of 10+2 or its equivalent from any board recognized by the Council of Boards of School Education in India.

 

  • Minimum marks requirement: A student must have passed the 10+2 final examination or its equivalent, there is no minimum marks required for being eligible in the entrance examination for B.Des like NIFT, UCEED etc.

 

  • Age Limit:  While NIFT or National Institute of Fashion Technology allows students to enter the BDes. and B.Ftech courses with a maximum age limit of 23yrs for general category students, UCEED conducted by the IITs keeps it to 24 years. The upper age limit relaxation for the SC/ST candidates is 5 years.

NID Ahmedabad keeps the upper age limit to 20 years for general candidates and there is 3 years relaxation for SC/ST and PWD candidates.

The FDDI or Footwear Design & Development Institute keeps it at 25 years as the upper age limit.

 

Courses Offered: BDes. or Bachelor of Design Course is the major course offered in India in the field of Design which is a 4 years full time course. There are few colleges and universities that also provide a 5 years Integrated dual degree courses of BDes. - MDes. There are few colleges that also offer 3 years BSc. courses in Fashion and Design like Army Institute of Fashion & Design, NIIFT Mohali etc.

Major Entrance Exams:

The Major Entrance Exams for Fashion and Design courses after 12th are as follows:

  • NIFT Entrance Exam: This is the biggest Entrance Examination for Fashion Design aspirants in India. Through this Entrance Examination, the 16 campuses of the National Institute of Fashion Technology or NIFT take admissions into the 4-year B.Des course offered in the following disciplines: Fashion Design, Leather Design, Accessories Design, Knitwear Design, Textile Design and Fashion Communication. They also offer a 4-year B.FTech course in Apparel Production. Students having any subject combination in 10+2 or equivalent are eligible for this examination, however only for admission in the B.FTech course a student must have Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects in 10+2 and equivalent.

  • UCEED: This is the most important design entrance examination in India known as the Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design or UCEED conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay or IIT Bombay. The Entrance Exam is conducted for the admissions in the 4 years B.Des and 5-year B.Des - MDes. dual degree courses offered by IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad and IIITDM, Jabalpur. Students having any subject combination are eligible to take admission in these courses, however only for taking admissions in the B.Des courses offered by IIT, Guwahati a student must have passed or be appearing in 10+2 or equivalent having Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in their subject combination.

The Score of UCEED is also used for admission by various private colleges and universities for their B.Des course.

  • NID DAT: National Institute of Design Aptitude Test or NID DAT is conducted for the 4 year B.Des courses offered at NID Ahmedabad, NID Andhra Pradesh, NID Haryana, NID Madhya Pradesh and NID Assam in the following fields: Animation Film Design, Ceramic & Glass Design, Exhibition Design, Film and Video Communication, Furniture and Interior Design, Graphic Design, Product Design and Textile Design. The NID or National Institute of Design have been made institutes of National importance and are one of the most important design colleges in India for Bachelor and Masters courses in various fields of Design.

  • FDDI AIST: Anyone who is interested in specifically Footwear Design, then this is one of the entrance examinations that one should not miss. The Footwear Design and Development Institute All India Selection Test or FDDI AIST is conducted for admission into the 4 year B.Des course offered at its 12 campuses in the following fields: Footwear Design & Production, Fashion Design and Leather Goods and Accessories Design. This exam is also used for admission in the 3 year BBA course in Retail and Fashion Merchandise offered at its Noida, Hyderabad, Patna and Chandigarh campuses.
