Engineering has been the course that has the highest number of students aspiring for it in India since more than two or three decades now. The course that has a massive range of courses, branches and the connection with various other fields makes it one of the most dynamic courses right now.
This is the course which is present in the maximum number of colleges in India, has the maximum number of Entrance Examinations and also has the maximum number of current students and future aspirants in India right now.
The course of Engineering can be entered by students after completing their school education of 10+2 or its equivalent and students who complete diploma in technical or vocational subjects after class 10th or equivalent are also given an opportunity to enter directly into the second year of the course.
Here, we are only covering students who want to enter Engineering after completing class 12th or its equivalent.
So, who can become an Engineer in India?
Eligibility:
Subject Requirements: Although the general notion is that for Engineering requirement of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics is compulsory but as per the JEE Main Eligibility criteria the Subject combinations required for admissions into the various B.E/B.Tech courses offered at various NITs, IIITs, GFTIs etc is that a student must have passed qualifying examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of these- Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/ Technical Vocational subject.
For most of the Engineering Courses of Bachelor of Engineering (BE), Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), Dual Degrees of B.Tech M.Tech and Dual degrees of even B.Tech-MBA Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are required as the compulsory combination. But for some branches in Engineering like Biotechnology etc PCM combination is not compulsory.
So we advise the students to check the eligibility of their particular interest in Branch before applying for the Entrance Examinations.
Age Limit: There is no age limit in JEE Mains and few other Entrance Examinations. Although there is a limitation on the number of attempts a student can appear for the examination. For JEE Advanced the upper age limit is set to be 25 years and for SC/ST and Pwd candidates the same is set to 30 years. There is a limitation on the number of attempts in JEE Advanced too that makes it difficult for students of a higher age to compete with students of lower age in the same examination.
Number of Attempts:
For JEE Main: A student can only appear for three consecutive years from the current year. For example to give JEE Main 2021 a student who has passed class 12th or equivalent in 2018 or before cannot appear.
For JEE Advanced: A student can only appear for two consecutive years from the current year. For example to give JEE Advanced 2021 a student who has passed class 12th or equivalent in 2019 or before cannot appear for the examination.
Similarly, there are various Entrance Examinations that limit the number of attempts in order to limit the number of test-takers for the examination since this field already has a lot of students appearing.
Students are advised to check the same while applying at individual entrance examinations.
Educational Qualification: 10+2 or it's equivalent.
Marks Requirement: In JEE Mains - Admission to B.E. / B.Tech Courses in NITs, IIITs and CFTIs participating through Central Seat Allocation Board will be based on All India Rank subject to the condition that the candidate should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class / Qualifying examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST candidates the qualifying marks would be 65% in the 12thclass / qualifying examination.
For JEE Advanced in the Academic year 2020, the minimum marks requirement has been removed due to the various cancellation of examinations because of the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Students are advised to check the latest minimum marks requirement eligibility very carefully for every Entrance Examination before applying for it.
Governing Body: AICTE or the All India Council for Technical Education is the governing body for Engineering and related courses in India. So, every college or University that provides Engineering or related courses must be approved by the AICTE before starting the courses.
Course: Mainly after 10+2 or equivalent the undergraduate courses offered in Engineering are B.E or Bachelor of Engineering and B.Tech or Bachelor of Technology which are 4-year full-time degree courses.
Although there are various other courses that are also offered by many colleges/universities in Engineering like:
B.Tech-M.Tech 5 years Dual Degree Courses.
B.Tech-MBA 6 years Dual Degree Courses.
Integrated 5 year M.Tech Degree Courses.
Integrated B.Tech - MSc. Degree Courses and some more.
Engineering is a course that has a vast number of fields or branches in it, students enroll for the various Engineering courses and choose one of these branches, some of these are as follows:
Major Entrance Examinations:
JEE Main: This is the biggest Entrance Examination in India for the various Engineering, Architecture, Planning, Agriculture and Science courses offered in the various Colleges/Universities, etc in India.
This examination serves as direct admission criteria for the various NITs or National Institute of Technology, IIITs or Institutes of Information Technology, GFTIs or Government Funded Technical Institutes and various other Private and government institutions in various states all over India.
This examination also serves as the selection criteria for the students who are eligible to give JEE Advanced for admissions into the IITs. Approximately the top 2.5 lakh students in JEE Main are selected for appearing in the JEE Advanced to get admissions in the various Engineering and Science courses.
The Joint Entrance Examination Main or JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency or NTA twice every year and the score of both the examinations stands valid only for that academic year. A student can appear for the examination both times also to improve their score, in that case the better score of the two attempts will be considered final.
The JEE Main Rank is used by various top private universities and colleges and also by various government and private institutions and states for conducting their admission counselling in the engineering colleges.
JEE Main Result is also used by the Indian Navy for selection of the Permanent Commission For Undergraduate Level Entry: 10+2(B.Tech).

JEE Advanced:
The Joint Entrance Examination Advanced or JEE Advanced is conducted by the IITs or the Indian Institutes of Technology for admissions into the various undergraduate Engineering, Architecture and Science courses offered at currently the 23 IITs in India.
The Indian Institutes of Technology are the best institutions for Engineering and Technology in India and formed as autonomous Institutions by the government of India. These institutes have a very high national as well as international reputation.
The result of JEE Advanced is also used by some other premium institutions in India like the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore or IISc. Bangalore and IIST or Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology for admissions into their various undergraduate science and engineering courses.
