Company Secretary is one of the very high paying career options globally. This is a career option in which the candidate is placed in the top management of the company. Every big Corporate house needs the help of a company secretary for running their business and as a matter of fact, this is a position which almost any big corporate cannot afford not to have in their company.
A company secretary is one of the key personnel in any company, placed at the top of the organizational hierarchy, i.e., management level and is also responsible for managing the legal, financial and statutory requirements of the company.
Governing Body: The Company secretary course in India is governed by The Institute of Company Secretaries of India or ICSI.
Who can become a Company Secretary?
Eligibility:
Subject Requirements: Students from any stream can pursue the course of Company Secretary (Excluding Fine Arts).
Age Limit: Less than 26 years.
Minimum Educational Qualification: 10+2 or it's equivalent.
Course:
A student can pursue the course of CS along with enrolling in a normal graduation degree programme too, as it will help them in getting good job opportunities even at an earlier stage.
A student can complete the executive and professional programmes of the ICSI and clear the respective examinations to become a member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India.
Also, if a student wants to pursue CS as a full-time course, a full-time non-residential Integrated Company Secretary Course (Executive Programme) is offered by CCGRT or Centre of Corporate Governance, Research & Training of ICSI or Institute of Company Secretaries of India.
This is a three years full-time non-residential integrated course. A fee charged for the course is INR 4,00,000 only, i.e. INR 2,00,000 at Executive and INR 2,00,000 at Professional Level. In the last year, i.e. the third year, no fee is charged, rather students receive a stipend from companies/organizations where they undergo 12 Months of Management / Practical Training.
Admissions to the above full-time integrated course are given on the following criteria:
Academics: Based on the academic achievements of the candidates including the marks obtained in CSEET/Foundation/Final Pass of CA/CWA/Graduation, etc.

The Company Secretary course can be entered just after completing 10+2 or even after graduation.
Earlier to complete this course a student had to clear three programmes namely:
Foundation Programme
Executive Programme and
Professional Programme
The Institute of Company Secretaries of India has now eliminated the Foundation Programme and has introduced a Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test or CSEET to directly enter into the executive programme.
This test is both for students who want to enter the CS Executive programme after 10+2 or after graduation.
More details about the entrance test are as follows:
CSEET: Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test is now conducted for entry in the Executive stage of the company secretary course. The Examination is also necessary for the graduates/postgraduates who want to pursue the Company Secretary Executive programme.
CSEET is conducted on a quarterly basis 4 times a year.
The validity of the CSEET score is 1 year.
Only the following candidates are exempted from the CSEET:
• Candidates who have passed CS Foundation Programme are exempted from CSEET without any payment of exemption fee.
• Candidates who have passed the Final Examination of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and/or The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) are exempted from CSEET and shall pay `5,000 (Rupees Five Thousand Only) towards exemption fee at the time of Registration to CS Executive Programme.
