Architecture and Planning as career options have increased their popularity exponentially with time. With so much urban development all around the globe the requirement of quality Architecture and Planning has never been so much demanding as it is now and surely to be increased many folds in the years to come.
Both Architecture and Planning courses are closely related as they are completely involved in the urban development or real estate industry. Although there is a slight difference in these courses.
Bachelor in Architecture teaches a student everything related to the organizational and artistic aspects of construction. It is a 5 year course that teaches a student both theoretical and practical aspects of Architecture.
Bachelor in Planning is a 4 year course that teaches the students engineering, management and even resolving challenges to human urban development. The course mainly focuses on Urban and Regional Development and planning and also emphasizes on environment and resource development management.
Eligibility:
Subject Requirements:
B.Arch: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in 10+2 or its equivalent.
B.Plan: Mathematics in 10+2 or its equivalent.
Age Limit: There is no particular Age limit to appear in the various entrance exams like JEE Main etc. but only those students who have passed the class 10+2 or its equivalent in the last 3 consecutive years are only eligible.
For Example: Students wanting to get admission in 2021 should have passed class 12th or its equivalent in the years 2021, 2020 or 2019. Any student who has passed the school system of 10+2 or equivalent in 2018 or before will not be eligible.
Although there is no age limit in the entrance examinations eligibility, there are upper age limits in particular colleges and universities to give admissions which students must check before applying.
Like in IITs the maximum age limit is 25 years and for SC/ST candidates it's relaxed to a maximum of 30 years. Although for appearing in JEE ADvanced a student must have passed class 10+2 or equivalent in the current year and consecutive last year only.
Educational Qualification: 10+2 or its equivalent from a recognized board or university.
Marks Requirement: To get admission in the IITs, IIITs, NITs and GFTIs the students must have scored 75% or above or be in the top 20 percentile of their school board in order to take admissions. For SC/ST candidates the minimum percentage required is 65% for admissions
The eligibility criteria decided by the Council of Architecture for admission to B.Arch. course other than NITs, IIITs, CFTIs:
“No candidate shall be admitted to architecture course unless she/he has passed an examination at the end of the qualifying examination with 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and also 50% marks in aggregate of the qualifying examination”.
For B. Planning: The candidates should have passed the qualifying examination with 50 % marks in Mathematics and 50% marks in aggregate of the qualifying examination.
Courses:
B.Arch: 5 years full-time course. (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are compulsory in class 10+2 or equivalent to study this course).
B.Planning: 4 years full-time course. (Mathematics is compulsory as a subject in 10+2 or its equivalent to study this course).
Major Entrance Exams:
JEE Main Paper II: This is the biggest entrance exam in India for admissions into the various B.Sc, B.Tech, B.Arch and B.Planning courses in India. Through this examination, the students get admissions in NITs, IIITs, CFTIs, various private colleges and universities and also used by most of the states for admissions in their respective colleges.
This is one of the major examinations for Architecture and Planning in India and also serves as the qualifying criteria for appearing in JEE Advanced which is the entrance examination for admissions in the Indian Institutes of Technology or IITs in India.
The JEE Main Entrance Examination for B.Arch and B.Planning are as follows:
B.Arch: Mathematics- Part I and Aptitude Test-Part II in “Computer Based Test (CBT)” mode only and Drawing Test –Part III in “Pen & Paper Based” (offline) mode to be attempted on a drawing sheet of A4 size.
B.Planning: Mathematics- Part I, Aptitude Test-Part II and Planning Based Questions-Part III in “Computer Based Test (CBT)” mode only.

AAT (JEE Advanced): At present, there are only three IITs that offer the B.Arch course namely: IIT BHU (Varanasi), IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee. To get admissions in the B.Arch course in these colleges a student must first clear JEE Main then qualify JEE Advanced and then has to appear and qualify the Architecture Aptitude Test or AAT conducted for admissions in these 3 IITs B.Arch courses
The AAT or Architecture Aptitude Test is a pen, pencil Paper-based test conducted in all the 23 IITs. This is a 3-hour duration test that also includes drawing. The Students clearing the minimum cutoff for the AAT will be declared as pass in the AAT.
The admissions in the B.Arch courses will be given to students who have passed the AAT on the basis of their All India Ranks in JEE Advanced, there will be no separate ranks declared for AAT.

NATA: National Aptitude Test in Architecture or NATA is the largest entrance examination conducted for admissions in the 5 years B.Arch courses all across India. This examination is used as a criteria for the B.Arch courses admissions all across the country except IITs, NITs, IIITs, CFTIs that have their own admission criteria (JEE Main Paper II, JEE Advanced (AAT).
NATA is conducted by the Council of Architecture twice a year and a student can appear both times. The best score of the two appearances will be used for admissions.
The Score of NATA is valid for admissions in only the current academic year.
