Kaustubh has secured his seat at IIT Bombay. In this interview Kaustubh discusses his  examination strategies that the aspirants  can follow who are preparing for UCEED.

Here are the excerpts from the Interview :

Harshita : Congratulations for securing AIR 2 in UCEED. Did you expect to be the topper of UCEED exam?

Kaustubh :I didn’t expect to get A.I.R 2 at all. After the exam I did feel that I had performed well but never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be in top 10 let alone securing rank 2. It’s a pleasant surprise.

Harshita : The Competition in the exam is quite high. What would be the perfect strategy a student can adopt to crack UCEED Examination?

Kaustubh:  I would say the biggest factor in determining this would be to not panic. UCEED is not a mechanical exam but rather a creative one and panicking would make you lose your creative edge.

Harshita : Having the right set of Books and study material is always a must for any exam preparation. What Books and Study materials would you recommend for UCEED preparation?

Kaustubh : Honestly, it’s not my place to speak about this. I didn’t use any books or study material or go to a coaching. The most I used was the previous year question papers.

Harshita :  Students start their preparation for Examinations like JEE and NEET mostly just after passing class 10th or sometimes even before that or after they enter class 12th. When did you start your preparation for UCEED and how did you go for it? Kindly take us through your journey

Kaustubh : I didn’t prepare much specifically for UCEED. I had started preparing in 12th class, however I had been doing art years prior as a hobby. I had learned the fundamentals of sketching in primary, started digital art in 7th and gotten myself into 3D cgi in 8th. Practicing for so many years honed my intuition, and gave me a more in depth understanding of proportions, anatomy. Especially 3D which gave me a deep understanding of space, logical reasoning, shapes and how they look from different angles, how highlights and shadows work around shapes. All these years of experience played a very big role in my performance in this exam.

Harshita :  The Drawing section in UCEED is also a must to crack the examination. So, how did you prepare for the drawing section of UCEED?

Kaustubh : As I had said, I started sketching at a very early age. And compared to almost everyone else I had the advantage of years of experience and refinement. Also this year’s drawing question had us draw characters which is the one subject I am arguable the best at sketching.

Harshita : What is the ideal time to start taking mock Tests & What role do mock tests play in Preparation? What was your strategies in particular towards mock tests?

Kaustubh : Mock tests are very important for this exam compared to other exams, and in my opinion it is ideal to start mock tests as early as possible, afterall the exam doesn’t gauge your mechanical knowledge but rather your ability and intuition. In fact, mock tests are not only a good way to gauge how much you can do, but it’s also a great way to learn as when it comes to creativity, you learn more by doing rather than studying.

Harshita : What advice would you like to give the future aspirants of UCEED & share with us the strategies you used to stay motivated in your exam days.

Kaustubh : UCEED is an exam that tests your intuition and your artistic perception. Unlike physics or chemistry it cannot be learned but rather has to be trained.

The advice I would give to future aspirants would be to do consistent hardwork rather than intense hardwork to train your artistic sense, perception of space, logical reasoning and the like. Another thing, which is in my opinion very important, is to try and understand everything you see, which is just natural curiosity.
