The application process for NCHM JEE 2021 has started on February 3 on the official website

At this point in time, students need a ton of guidance about preparation strategies, books among many other things. To provide some help to students, I had a talk with Mr. Ashish Garg. He is Senior Faculty and Program Incharge - Hotel Management at PRATHAM Test Prep.

Here are excerpts from the interview:

Ojasvi: NCHM JEE syllabus consists of Numerical Ability & Analytical Aptitude, Reasoning and Logical Deduction, General Knowledge & Current Affairs, English Language and Aptitude for Service Sector. The number of question for English and Aptitude for Service Sector are comparatively more. How should students tackle this?

Ashish Garg: The English section of the NCHMCT JEE exam consists of Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary questions. The Reading Comprehension passage is followed by 4-5 questions. Vocabulary questions are from topics such as Antonyms, Synonyms, and Word Usage; Fill in the Blanks. Other types of questions asked in the exam are based on Para Jumbles, Grammar, Idioms & Phrases, etc.

A student should focus on learning vocabulary on daily basis. We at PRATHAM conduct YouTube Live Sessions on Vocabulary which will give you a proper understanding of words. At PRATHAM every student is provided with a capsule called the Vocab Booster. This book contains a number of words important for your entrance exam.

  • Regular practice and efficiency are a must to score the maximum marks in this section.
  • Revise grammar rules and concepts
  • The Student should develop a habit of reading and should solve two passages on daily basis.

For Service Aptitude:

The Aptitude for Service Sector section had questions related to the hotel industry and its services. This is an easy section of the exam as there is no wrong answer in this section, but the only thing worth paying attention to here is that there is graded marking in this section. Therefore if you are not sure of the answer then you should mark the option which you feel most likely to be correct. We at PRATHAM conduct special classes on Service Aptitude which gives a fair idea about this section. The Faculty gives real-time situations in class and asks the students to share their responses.

Some of the frequently asked questions in this section were:

  • How would you react if you see a person who has met with an accident?
  • How would you make a decision if you were working at different posts (like Manager, Housekeeping, and Receptionist) in the hospitality industry?
  • How would you react if a customer misbehaved with you?
  • How would make a disabled person comfortable?

Ojasvi: NCHM JEE consists of 200 Multiple Choice Questions; the marking scheme provides 4 marks for every correct answer and deducts 1 mark for every answer. In your opinion, how should students avoid losing marks unnecessarily?

Ashish Garg: An informed aspirant always should understand the exam he/she is preparing for. A student should take Mocks and analyze them properly. This analysis will help you understand your grey areas and topics that require more practice. Therefore, a student should not aim to attempt all the questions instead should aim to maximize the score by attempting those questions that you are confident in attempting.

If a student takes mocks regularly it will help them to understand and develop a technique of Time Management. Time Management is very important when you need to maximize your score. A wise student will always try to utilize the time allotted well so that he/she is able to see all the questions in the entrance exam, because if you are not able to read all the questions then you will always be on a back foot. We at PRATHAM provide Test Series for NCHMCT-JEE to give students a lot of practice.

Ojasvi:  Since books are the most important aspect of preparation. Please suggest some books for section-wise and overall preparations.

Ashish Garg: The highly qualified subject matter experts at PRATHAM have devised a comprehensive study material for NCHMCT-JEE. Over the years the students have benefitted from this study material to get ranks and get admission to top IHMs. The Subject Matter experts have made books on all the subjects. Special emphasis is given on Vocabulary and Current affairs. Therefore the study material provided by PRATHAM is something that a student should look out for.

Ojasvi: IHM Aurangabad has a different admission procedure from most IHMs. A candidate is required to write a Statement of Purpose (SoP). Can you give some tips to students for writing meaningful SoPs which fit their skills and personalities?

Ashish Garg: Statement of Purpose, better known as SoP is the first impression of you. The college/University assesses your SoP to know your life, Interests, Hobbies, Achievements, Strengths, and overall understanding of your journey that helped you to choose the career path. Therefore, it is important that a student should list down incidents that have developed your interest to choose this career path. Brainstorming is very important to come up with a good SoP.

The Introduction: An interesting start will always hook the reader to read further and know you better. The Body of your SoP can include

  • Academic Achievements
  • Extra-Curricular Activities
  • Interest to pursue the major of your choice
  • Projects/Internships Undertaken
  • Your Contributions to the society
  • Why this Course
  • Your Contributions to the college
  • Your Short term and Long term goals

The Conclusion: Try to conclude the SoP by summarizing it efficiently and bring out all the points that show your interest in the course opted for.

Dos of writing an SoP:

  • Understand it is yours therefore be GENUINE
  • Brainstorming is always the key to write an effective SoP
  • View some Sample SoP before writing the final version.
  • Make sure that the language used is simple that conveys the message clearly.

PRATHAM also helps its students in writing SoP that helps to make a solid foundation and putting the best foot forward for his/her candidature.

Ojasvi: Apart from NCHM JEE, what are other examinations that a candidate must prepare for to get into good hospitality colleges after 12th?
