Students have a lot of doubts and queries during this time. To solve these I had a talk with Mr. Amitendra Kumar who is the Product Head, After 12 at Career Launcher Educate Ltd.

Here are excerpts from the interview:

Ojasvi: NCHM JEE syllabus consists of Numerical Ability & Analytical Aptitude, Reasoning and Logical Deduction, General Knowledge & Current Affairs, English Language and Aptitude for Service Sector. The number of question for English and Aptitude for Service Sector are comparatively more. What advice would you give to students about this?

Amitendra Kumar: NCHM JEE is a balanced paper testing the reasoning and aptitude of the student for the hospitality management program. The English and Service Aptitude section does have the maximum weightage and has been designed so to test the aptitude and communication skills of the candidate. The English section comprises questions based on Comprehension, Grammar, and Vocabulary. The Service Aptitude section consists of situation-based questions, where students are required to respond to a particular situation given. The idea is to look out for the most appropriate solution to a given problem. Thus, practice is the key to success in the two areas.

Ojasvi: NCHM JEE consists of 200 Multiple Choice Questions; the marking scheme provides 4 marks for every correct answer and deducts 1 mark for every answer. In your opinion, how should students approach this?

Amitendra Kumar: Considering negative marking involved in the paper, students are better advised to refrain from too many guesses. One should look to solve the section/questions which he/she is comfortable and can solve easily. No unnecessary guesswork must be done as it may lead to too many negatives and will bring down the overall scores, thus impacting the rank.

Ojasvi: What are the most important books that an aspirant must study to crack NCHM JEE?

Amitendra Kumar: Solving past years' papers will really help. Apart from that, one should work on grammar and vocabulary and can refer to the grammar book from their school curriculum. Similarly, one should practice questions across other sections from the past year’s papers, and for the numerical ability section; one must work through the fundamentals of Maths from standard 9-10. For General Awareness, one must read newspapers regularly and refer to the yearbook, if not a regular reader of news.

Ojasvi: Apart from NCHM JEE, what are other examinations that a candidate must prepare for to get into good hospitality colleges after 12th?

Amitendra Kumar: Apart from NCHM JEE which can lead to admissions to the IHMs across the country, one can look forward to the following good colleges:

  1. Welcome Graduate School of Hotel Administration, Manipal
  2. Symbiosis School of Culinary Arts, Pune
  3. IHM, Taj Group of Hotels
  4. STEP program at Oberoi Hotels
  5. Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University

All the entrances are designed to test aptitude and reasoning skills. Hence, working for NCHM JEE helps with the other written exams. One must also work on his/her extempore skills and interview handling, as same would be judged by few of the institutions.

Ojasvi: IHM Aurangabad has a different admission procedure from most IHMs. Can you explain how to write a good Statement of Purpose (SoP)?

Amitendra Kumar: Statement of Purpose is an essay writing exercise, which allows the candidate to state the purpose of applying to a particular program. A well-written SOP is extremely important for the selection. It helps the institutions to understand whether the students are really interested in the program he/she is applying for. To write a good SOP, the candidate must follow the guidelines given below:

  1. Introspect about the major events in your life that have influenced your personality and decisions in your life.
  2. State your expectations from the program and the institute. Also, state your passion for the program.
  3. One must also reflect on how the candidate will add value to the program and the institute in his/her journey.

Ojasvi: What suggestions would you give to students for time management, considering the exam is 3 hours long with 200 questions?

Amitendra Kumar: While time management is important for any entrance exam, one must also remember that every individual is unique in their capabilities, and the strategy to crack an exam differs. There cannot be a one size fit all approach. However, for NCHM JEE, one must work on his/her strengths and accordingly decide to attempt and order the sections. Suggested time plan during the paper:

Numerical Ability and Analytical Aptitude: 30 min

English Language: 40-45 min

Reasoning and Logical Deduction: 30 min

General Knowledge and Current Affairs: 15 min

Service for Aptitude Sector: 35-40 min

The paper is not difficult and one must practice enough questions across each section to be comfortable and one must also work on their individual time-plan based on their strengths and weaknesses.
