In this article, candidates can refer to the tables given to calculate their percentiles according to their estimated scores/marks. After this, they can also check their ranks according to the estimated percentile. The expected range of ranks/percentile given below is based on the previous years' trends and the normalization formula used by NTA.

The analysis of marks vs percentile for JEE Main helps a candidate to estimate their most probable rank easily. It is to be noted here that the JEE mains marks vs rank is just to calculate the probable rank in the exam. It may differ from the actual rank in JEE Main 2021 exam.

JEE MAIN 2021 - Normalization Process

Normalization is incorporated to equalize the difficulty levels of the exam when it is conducted in multiple sessions. It helps in equalizing the difficulty level of the exam conducted in multiple sessions on the scheduled dates. The JEE Main percentile score obtained by a candidate is determined only after applying normalization to the marks obtained by a candidate. JEE Main Percentile scores indicate the percentage of candidates who have scored equal to or below that particular percentile in the examination. A percentile score is measured on a scale of 100 to 0 for each session of examinees.

NTA will compile the raw marks of the students and normalize the same to arrive at the percentile scores for each subject – Maths, Physics, and Chemistry as well as total. The highest score of each session will get the same percentile of 100 which is ideal. The marks obtained in between the highest and lowest scores will also be converted to percentiles. This percentile score will be used for the preparation of the merit lists. The percentile scores will be calculated up to 7 decimal places to avoid ties amongst candidates with the same scores.

The examination results for each session would be prepared in the form of

Raw Scores
Percentiles Scores separately for each of the three subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) and the Total.

T1P, M1P, P1P, C1P be the Percentile Scores of Total, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry of that candidate.

METHOD OF RESOLVING TIES:

The overall merit/ranking shall be based on the Percentile scores of the Total Raw Scores. In case of two or more candidates obtaining equal Percentile Scores in the Test, the inter-se merit of such candidates shall be determined in order of preference as follows:

Candidates obtaining higher Percentile Score in Mathematics in the Test.
Candidates obtaining higher Percentile Score in Physics in the Test.
Candidates obtaining higher Percentile Score in Chemistry in the Test.
Candidates older in age to be preferred.

The JEE Main Result 2021 will be released separately for each session (February, March, April, and May). The best score of the two sessions will be taken into consideration for candidates who appeared in both sessions. The merit list will be prepared on the final scores and ranks announced based on the same.

The JEE Main percentile score tells how a candidate has performed in comparison to all the other students who appeared for the exam. The percentile is neither the percentage score (that is the percentage of the maximum marks obtained by a student) nor the raw marks (the total and absolute marks secured by the student).

The percentile score of JEE Mains will tell the student what percentage of the total number of candidates who appeared for the exam scored less than or equal to that particular percentile in that examination. The formula to calculate JEE Main percentile score is given below.

Percentile Score of a Student = 100 x (The number of students who secured a raw score or an actual score that is EQUAL TO OR LESS than the student) / (The total number of students who appeared in that session).

With this formula, the raw marks of the students are normalized and expressed as Percentile Score (which is also called NTA Score) and the discrepancy caused by variation of difficulty level across various sessions are eliminated.

*Disclaimer: Students should be aware that the percentile is calculated on the basis of the highest marks obtained by a student in a particular shift and the overall difficulty level of the paper.
